About the Author

Karen Mantyla is president of Quiet Power, a distance learning training and consulting company based in Washington, D.C. She consults with both public and private sector clients to help design, develop, implement, and maintain distance learning systems. Her focus is on the human side of the distance learning equation to ensure that the trainers receive proper support, guidance, and training as they select and deploy distance learning methods of delivery. In addition, she helps design learner support systems, tools, and methods to ensure success and continuous process improvement for all remote site facilitators and learners.

She is the coauthor of Distance Learning: A Step-By-Step Guide for Trainers (ASTD, 1997) and the author of Consultative Sales Power: Achieving Sales Excellence (Crisp Publications, 1995), and Interactive Distance Learning Exercises That Really Work! (ASTD 1999). She also served as the editor for The 2000/2001 ASTD Distance Learning Yearbook (McGraw-Hill, 2000) and The 2001/2002 ASTD Distance Learning Yearbook (McGraw-Hill, 2001).

Ms. Mantyla received professional certification in distance learning from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has more than 20 years' experience in the development and implementation of workplace education programs, with a specific emphasis on reaching learners in dispersed geographic locations. She held many senior leadership positions, including vice president of a Fortune 500 corporation.

Ms. Mantyla is the secretary of the Federal Government Distance Learning Association (FGDLA), a specialized chapter of the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA), and the editor of the FGDLA's Distance Learning News. Ms. Mantyla is a certified facilitator for ASTD's human performance improvement certification program and a member of the e-learning brain trust and publishing committees for ASTD.

Ms. Mantyla's biography is featured in the 2001 editions of Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Women, and Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
