Updated and expanded to embrace new developments in the electronic environment and new emphases on multicultural and female influences and accomplishments, the fourth edition (3rd ed., 1988) of this guide to humanities information sources includes 1,250 major entries. Chapters cover general humanities, philosophy, religion, visual arts, performing arts, and language and literature. Organized as previous editions, the volume provides one chapter on sources and another on access for each area. The "sources" chapters have in-depth descriptions of both print and electronic tools; the "access" chapters relate to finding and retrieving information. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Last published in 1988, this guide to the literature lists more than 1,200 resources for research in philosophy, religion, the visual and performing arts, and literature. History is not covered. For each discipline there are two chapters. One has essays on major divisions of the discipline, the use of computers in the field, and important organizations, information centers, and special collections. The second annotates reference works arranged by form: bibliographies, indexes, biographical sources, etc. While the book's arrangement is basically unchanged, some new subtopics have been added; for example, in the religion sources chapter, the section "New Alternatives: New Age, Occult, Etc." The annotations are helpful and often cite related sources. Coverage is admirably current, with many 1993 and even 1994 sources listed. More than 25 percent of the sources included are new to this edition. The editors have also done an excellent job of noting electronic sources. Author/title and subject indexes aid access.
More detailed guides to the literature of these disciplines exist, some of them published by Libraries Unlimited, for example, Reference Works in British and American Literature (1990-91) and The Performing Arts: A Guide to the Reference Literature (1994). However, for a very up-to-date overview, The Humanities is highly recommended for public and academic libraries. Sandy Whiteley
