Spanish gold hidden inside a three-hundred-year-old coral reef . . . will the pirates find it before the MacGregor kids can stop them?
Dr. Jack MacGregor, a well-known zoologist, arrives in the Cayman Islands with the sole purpose of inspecting the world's only sea-turtle farm, accompanied by his paleontologist wife, Mavis, and their children, Chris, Heather, and R.O. Soon the experience turns from academic sojourn to adventurous danger when the teens discover "reef raiders" intent on stealing ancient pirate gold embedded in the protected coral reefs.
Investigating the trail of the modern-day pirates both above and underwater, the teen trio entangle themselves in one daring episode after another. Whether being attacked by a shark or captured by pirates, by either diving too deep, or knowing too much, the MacGregor kids find themselves in harrowing situations in every chapter, yet manage to find surprising solutions to their predicaments.
Featuring environmental awareness alongside high-tech gadgets, and contrasting family values with contemporary criminals, this first novel in the MacGregor Family Adventure Series keeps pace with the best of modern-day mysteries, integrating scientific details with lively dialogue and humor. As R.O., Heather, and Chris investigate the lost treasure of Devils Grotto, readers learn about historical events, endangered species, scuba diving, and even witness some romance along the way!
Author Richard Trout, an environmental biologist, consultant, and college professor, researches the details of his adventure tales firsthand to make them meticulously accurate. As a scuba diver with more than thirty years' experience, he has explored the waters of the Caribbean and the Pacific. In addition to teaching biological sciences at Oklahoma City Community College, Mr. Trout spends countless hours in schools and libraries talking with young people about his stories and travels, environmental issues, the pleasures of reading, and the craft of writing. The father of two grown daughters, he lives in Oklahoma City with his wife.
