Max Brand is the best-known pen name of Frederick Faust, creator of such beloved characters as Destry and Dr. Kildare, among others. Eighty motion pictures and many radio and television programs have been based on his work. Faust went to Italy as a war correspondent during World War II after the United States entered the conflict, and he was killed during a night attack on a hilltop village held by the German army. His literary output was so prolific during his life that he averaged three new books per year for seventy-five years, including many years after his death.
Originally published as a magazine serial in 1932, this classic western features Alfred Larribee, a layabout sent west to live with his cousins family, the Dents. At first, he lives up to expectations, spending his time drinking, gambling, and otherwise, well, lying about. But when Wilbur Dent decides to punish Alfred by forcing him to ride some raw mustangs, Alfred displays an unexpected and inexplicable gift for taming horses. When he successfully rides a notoriously skittish stallion, Sky Blue, he makes an enemy of another man, who deliberately spooks the horse and sends him running off. Now Alfred must risk his own life to bring back the horse, and in searching for the animal, he finds himself.
