Phil Dunlap has had a lifelong affair with the history and characters of the Old West. He also can't pass up a good mystery; thus, comes a novel where the two paths cross. Often drawn to that haunted land where ghosts of gunfighters, scalawags, dance hall floozies, and victims of gold fever still float among the cacti, he is determined to relive that distant era as a novelist. He lives near Indianapolis with his wife, Judy. Ambush Creek is the fourth featuring U.S. Marshal Piedmont Kelly. The Death of Desert Belle, Fatal Revenge, Blood on the Rimrock, and Call of the Gun are also available.
*Starred Review* The author’s fourth western novel featuring U.S. marshal Piedmont Kelly finds, in the Arizona Territory of 1880, the sheriff of Cochise County concerned about three scruffy men who have just ridden into town. Their “potential for disaster” sends a chill up his spine, because they are “rough, dirty, unshaven, and carrying enough lethal hardware for a small army.” It turns out that the three are bounty hunters, as unpopular a sort of folks as can be found in the Old West. In fact, one of them, Snake, bears the reputation of a “low-down, back-shootin’ polecat.” It seems the bounty hunters are on the trail of one Alex Bowdre, and the trail has brought them to these parts. (Bowdre is wanted for murder in New Mexico.) The sheriff’s concern is so great, the presence of these dudes so worrisome, that he calls in Marshal Piedmont Kelly, who, along with his old pal Spotted Dog, an Apache, pursues the bounty hunters; they have kidnapped a local rancher who may or may not be the person they are attempting to turn in to get a reward. With a raft of well-drawn, even indelible, characters, the novel also offers a compellingly involved, quite plausible, and tightly woven plot. --Brad Hooper
