From the Inside Flap

Note to Reader:
In attending a modern day rodeo event, your senses would be engulfed by all of the well-known sights and sounds of our heritage such as cowboys and cowgirls wearing their popular broad brimmed hats, their protective chaps, and their squeaky leather boots with clattering spurs. The audience would be mesmerized by the skillful display of lassos being flung to encircle the necks of bolting calves from their chutes and, in the midst of the applause, you'd probably say to yourself that there's nothing more iconic of a Texan than a cowboy or a cowgirl. Yet, your'd be mistaken. These are actually the legacies of Texas' first real cowboys: the Mexican vaqueros. The vaqueros were responsible for introducing the Mexican style of ranching into Texas and the southwestern United States up to Canada. In addition to the work related "tools of the trade," cultural elements such as clothing, food, language, and most importantly, values and mores originating from Mexican and South American influences can be enjoyed and appreciated with pride today.
