For 6,000 years interior lighting had depended upon plant and animal oil, beeswax and tallow- fuels that produce a flame and are therefore a considerable fire hazard. The beginning of the twentieth century marked the development of electricity and gas, and the technological growth of this period was matched by an intense interest in design. In this book, the lighting designer, manufacturer and retailer, Christopher Wray, describes the developments of the period as illustrated in 85 fine color prints of classic, whimsical and ingenious light fittings that include pendant lanterns, statue table lamps, desk lamps, lanterns and chandeliers. James Hinks and Son, founded in the 1840's, was a company specializing in the manufacture of brasswork and good quality, reasonably priced lighting. It built it's success upon the invention of Hink's oil burners in 1865, which doubled the amount of light produced by a paraffin lamp, and were supplied throughout the world.
