This book deals with the analysis and feedback control of dissipative dynamical systems. It presents the background of dissipative systems theory. Linear as well as nonlinear systems are treated, and many examples are given throughout the chapters. Some infinite dimensional and non-smooth examples are also included. The emphasis is put on the application towards the design of stable feedback control laws. Then the theory is illustrated on physical examples; (Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems are thoroughly studied, as well as adaptive control). It is shown how the dissipativity properties of a system can be used in the design of stable feedback controllers. Some experimental results are presented which corroborate the theoretical developments.
This monograph is primarily for readers who wish to get aquainted with Dissipative Systems Theory, and its uses in Systems and Control and Robotics. It constitutes an advanced introduction to the topic, and is the first volume ever published which is dedicated entirely to this subject.

From the reviews:
"A unique monograph on characterizations of dissipative dynamic systems and control designs for such systems. It is an excellent book for its diverse technical contents as well as its clear presentation. It is an excellent book for its diverse technical contents as well as its clear presentation. ... I found the contents of this book very rich in terms of both theoretical results and practical considerations ... . I strongly recommend this book to those who are interested in dynamic systems and control." (Gang Tao, International Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing, Vol. 18 (4), 2004)
"This new book presents a very good advanced introduction to dissipative systems with focus on feedback control. ... This book excellently combines the theoretical outline including the mathematical foundations with lots of elaborate examples. There is almost no concept or consideration which is not illustrated by some calculation for a given system. This is the real strength of this monograph ... . this book is really to be recommended to those who seek a sound, well written and far-reaching introduction." (Holger Kantz, Measurement Science and Technology, Vol. 12 (12), 2001)
