A companion volume to the reprint of The Nine Symphonies of Beethoven, this book is a lucid but non-technical analysis written in the author's characteristically accessible style. Composer, conductor and pianist himself, Antony Hopkins is uniquely placed to share with the reader his view of these works.
A general introduction precedes this detailed study which, with its many musical examples, provides a welcome and refreshing exploration of seven of Beethoven's finest and best-loved compositions.

Antony Hopkins is Fellow of the Royal College of Music, where he lectured and taught piano for many years.
The author, a longtime BBC radio broadcaster, discusses in seven separate chapters all of Beethoven's concertos: five for piano, one for violin, and the triple concerto. The essays combine technical analysis, historical data, and personal opinion in the hopes of reawakening the curiosity of listeners who are familiar with the music to the point of not listening anymore. Unfortunately, the historical material is decades out of date and full of errors; the analysis is often pointless and full of jargon beyond the comprehension of anyone who does not already know the information; and the writing style is arrogant, condescending, and frequently silly. This slim, pricey book is not recommended.?Timothy J. McGee, Univ. of Toronto
