Review

"Wait to fail is a policy of schooling that does not serve our students. Burke and Depke respond to this problematic practice with a well-articulated, crystal-clear delineation of what to do before it s too late. Their practical treatment of formative assessment in the RTI classroom is must-have resource for school leaders."

--Robin Fogarty

"Using Formative Assessment in the RTI Framework is bursting with valuable information that will inform the work of individual teachers, schools, and entire districts. Depka and Burke demonstrate a laser-like focus on responding effectively to student needs, and provide educators with practical tools enabling them to assess students, analyze, and act to increase achievement. This rich resource will support teachers in transferring their learning into their practice through professional development, specific intervention resources, and strategies for instruction and progress monitoring. This book will be a prized gift I will give to educators focused on meeting the needs of 21st century students!"

--Debbie McFalone, Consultant, McFalone Consulting: Leadership for Learning in the 21st Century

"Using Formative Assessment in the RTI Framework provides the perfect balance of background knowledge and practical application of assessment to enhance the 21st century classroom experience for both teacher and student. As an elementary principal working with teachers who strive to individualize instruction and assessment for students on a daily basis, I believe this book provides tools that can be easily implemented at any grade level and can be used to provide valuable feedback for documentation and data analysis during the RTI process. I am impressed with the simplistic nature with which the authors break down the tiered system, both academic and behavioral, of the RTI pyramid. One does not need to be an educator to understand the importance of classroom-based instruction at ALL levels of the intervention process. Using Formative Assessment in the RTI Framework makes it clear that carefully planned instruction and continual assessment are critical components of whole-group, small-group, and one-on-one instruction. No matter what tier at which a child may be learning as part of the RTI pyramid, instruction, assessment, and meaningful feedback will benefit struggling, proficient, and advanced students alike. The millennial learning style is a moving target because of the many different exposures to technology they have experienced. Children of the 21st century require teachers who are innovative, adaptive, and analytical with a varied set of tools and skills to be effective. Using Formative Assessment in the RTI Framework will help even the most traditional of teachers feel comfortable meeting the needs of their students by providing examples through performance-based, problem-solving, and critical-thinking assessment tools that meet each learner at his or her level. I cannot wait to share Using Formative Assessment in the RTI Framework with my staff and colleagues in the field of education."

--James A. Edmond, Jr., Principal, Woodside Elementary School, Hamilton School District
