About the Author

Staci M. Zolkoski, PhD, is an associate professor of special education at the University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler). She earned her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from the University of Toledo in Ohio. She earned her master’s degree and PhD in special education with an emphasis in behavior disorders from the University of North Texas. Prior to working at the collegiate level, Dr. Zolkoski taught kindergarten and fourth grade. She teaches classroom management at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as courses in special education, behavior disorders, and educational strategies. She has won Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society Teacher of the Year for the School of Education at UT Tyler two times and received the Teacher of the Year award for the Department of Education and Psychology at UT Tyler.
Dr. Zolkoski is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and is an active member of the Division for Emotional and Behavioral Health (DEBH), where she serves on the publications and professional development committees. She serves as the treasurer of the DEBH Foundation and is the editor of the DEBH newsletter titled Behavior Today. Dr. Zolkoski has presented and published her research in resilience and social-emotional learning at the national and international levels. She has worked with local school districts in implementing social-emotional learning and has done trainings supporting teachers and schools in social-emotional learning and classroom management. Dr. Zolkoski has also presented for ElevateTXEd, which is a collaborative effort across the University of Texas system.

Calli Lewis Chiu, PhD , is assistant professor in the Special Education Department at California State University, Fullerton. Before joining CSUF in 2018, she was assistant professor at California State University, Bakersfield and Shippensburg University. She holds a BFA in art education from the Texas Tech University; an MEd with an emphasis in multicultural issues in special education from the University of Texas, Austin; and a PhD with an emphasis in emotional and behavioral disorders in special education from the University of North Texas. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Lewis Chiu was a special education teacher for ten years and worked as a direct care service provider for adolescents in foster care. Her teaching expertise is instruction for children and youth with emotional and behavioral disorders. She has numerous publications and presentations related to improving outcomes for students with emotional and behavioral disorders and increasing cultural competence among preservice teachers.

Mandy E. Lusk, PhD , is a lifelong special educator who serves as the program chair and associate professor in special education at Clayton State University. Dr. Lusk earned her undergraduate degree in special education and master’s degree in students with behavior disorders from Mississippi State University. As a practitioner in special education for numerous years, Dr. Lusk predominantly taught students with emotional and behavioral disorders of all ages across the United States. She later earned a doctorate focused on students with behavior disorders from the University of North Texas. Dr. Lusk’s research agenda includes preparing teachers to effectively educate diverse learners with challenging behaviors.
