About the Author

Joellen Killion is a leadership and learning consultant residing in Lakeway, Texas. She serves as the senior advisor to and a senior consultant for Learning Forward. Joellen champions educator learning as the primary pathway to student success. Joellen leads, facilitates, and contributes to initiatives related to examining the link between professional learning and student learning. She has over forty years of experience in planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating professional learning in schools; school systems; state, ministry, and regional education agencies; international schools; and professional associations.
Joellen is a member of Learning Forward, the American Educational Research Association, Phi Delta Kappa, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. She has presented at many international and U.S.-based education conferences and has presented at thirty-seven consecutive Learning Forward conferences on her work and research in curriculum, professional learning, coaching, and leadership. She received merit recognition for her work in Adams 12 Five Star Schools and at the National Staff Development Council/Learning Forward. She initiated Learning Forward’s Coaches Academy and led the development, research, and implementation of the Standards for Professional Learning and the design and implementation of comprehensive professional learning systems for the Common Core curriculum.

William A. Sommers, PhD, of Austin, Texas, continues to be a learner, teacher, principal, author, leadership coach, and consultant. Bill has come out of retirement multiple times to put theory into practice as a principal in high schools and middle schools. He has worked at inner-city schools as well as in high-socioeconomic-status suburban districts. Bill has been a consultant for cognitive coaching, adaptive schools, brain research, poverty, habits of mind, conflict management, and classroom management strategies and is a Marshall Goldsmith–certified Stakeholder Centered Coach.

Ann Delehant is the owner of Delehant and Associates, an education consulting practice. She is an experienced facilitator, learning leader, and agent of systemwide change. Ann’s work focuses on developing, supporting, and coaching leaders at all levels; building collaborative cultures; and facilitating systems change.
Ann is a senior consultant for Learning Forward. For nearly thirty years, she was a member of The Dolan Team, a labor-management consulting firm that specialized in deep systemic change. She also served on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Educational Leadership and held many positions at the Rochester City School District, including coordinator of the Cooperation: University, Business, and Education (CUBE) Programs, grant writer, and director of staff development.
