Synopsis
Le 26 janvier 1914, par l'intermédiaire de son éditeur, Rilke, qui habite alors Paris, reçoit la lettre d'une inconnue. Elle est viennoise, pianiste, et s'appelle Magda von Hattingberg. La réponse du poète ne se fait pas attendre. Le ton est aimable, flatté, et Magda ne peut que reprendre la plume. Bien vite cette correspondance s'emballe. En l'espace de quelques lettres, l'inconnue devient la soeur, la confidente, la fidèle et tendre amie.
Pendant un mois, ils s'écrivent presque tous les jours, et même plusieurs fois par jour, des lettres de plusieurs pages, des "monstres" comme dit Rilke. Ils ne se sont encore jamais vus et chacun rêve de tout dire, de tout écrire, d'être transparent aux yeux de l'autre.
Cette correspondance, où l'absence redouble la passion, fait partie intégrante de l'oeuvre rilkéenne tant le poète s'y met à nu devant celle qu'il nomme "Benvenuta".
