Synopsis
En 1993, la jeune Marie Gesto disparaît à la sortie d''un supermarché d''Hollywood. L''affaire est confiée à l''inspecteur Bosch, qui ne peut pas la résoudre. Hanté par cet échec, Bosch rouvre le dossier année après année, mais sans grand succès. Il n''a pas renoncé et 13 ans plus tard, Bosch, qui est maintenant affecté à l''unité des affaires non résolues, reçoit un appel du district attorney lui signalant qu''un suspect accusé de deux meurtres de femmes particulièrement ignobles, dont celui de Marie Gesto, est prêt à passer aux aveux moyennant un recours à la procédure du plaider coupable qui lui éviterait la condamnation à mort. La tâche de Bosch consiste donc à recueillir ces aveux et à vérifier si l''assassin n''est pas en train de duper l''appareil judiciaire afin d''éviter la piqûre. Il va donc devoir être en contact avec l''individu qu''il recherche depuis treize ans et, tout de suite, c''est la haine. En épluchant le dossier établi par Bosch treize ans plus tôt, le district attorney découvre une erreur capitale dans l''enquête qu''il a menée. Le coéquipier de Bosch, Jerry Edgar, aurait reçu un coup de fil de l''assassin et, négligence ou autre, n''a pas remonté l''appel. Résultat : Bosch et lui auraient, de fait, laissé courir un tueur en série des plus cruels et dangereux. Après La Défense Lincoln, Michael Connelly revient au personnage d''Harry Bosch et nous offre un véritable chef-d''œuvre. La confrontation entre Bosch et un tueur des plus rusés est brillantissime. Une histoire aux revirements stupéfiants avec une profondeur psychologique et sociale rarement atteinte dans le roman policier.
