Dans un quartier de Tokyo, Tarô, trentenaire divorcé pas très dynamique et qui s'interroge sur ce qu'il doit faire des cendres de son père, observe sa voisine qui observe la maison d’en face. La jeune femme, Nishi, est obsédée par cette demeure occidentale dont elle a vu l'intérieur dans un livre de photos. Elle rêve depuis d'y pénétrer, de vérifier que rien n'a changé. Nishi va extirper Tarô de sa solitude pour l'embarquer dans une curieuse enquête qui leur permettra d'entrer dans la maison et d'en admirer toutes les beautés, mais aussi de se lier d'amitié, de sortir d'un quotidien morne et monotone, et de retrouver le goût du bonheur. Un roman-aquarelle, envoutant et nostalgique.

Shibasaki Tomoka est née en 1973 à Osaka. Elle fait ses débuts littéraires en 2000. Six ans plus tard, elle est finaliste du prix Akutagawa - le Goncourt japonais - avec Aujourd'hui dans cette ville, et est lauréate en 2014 avec son roman Jardin de Printemps.
