This book provides an overview of state-of-the-art uncertainty quantification (UQ) methodologies and applications, and covers a wide range of current research, future challenges and applications in various domains, such as aerospace and mechanical applications, structure health and seismic hazard, electromagnetic energy (its impact on systems and humans) and global environmental state change. Written by leading international experts from different fields, the book demonstrates the unifying property of UQ theme that can be profitably adopted to solve problems of different domains. The collection in one place of different methodologies for different applications has the great value of stimulating the cross-fertilization and alleviate the language barrier among areas sharing a common background of mathematical modeling for problem solution. The book is designed for researchers, professionals and graduate students interested in quantitatively assessing the effects of uncertainties in their fields of application. The contents build upon the workshop “Uncertainty Modeling for Engineering Applications” (UMEMA 2017), held in Torino, Italy in November 2017.

The book begins by providing a solid theoretical foundation in uncertainty modeling, covering essential concepts such as probability theory, fuzzy logic, and Bayesian inference. It then progresses to explore advanced topics, including stochastic processes, uncertainty quantification, and decision-making under uncertainty. One of the distinguishing features of this book is its emphasis on practical applications. Through numerous real-world examples and case studies drawn from diverse engineering disciplines, readers gain insights into how uncertainty impacts engineering systems and learn techniques for mitigating its effects. From civil engineering to aerospace, from mechanical systems to electrical networks, the book offers a wide-ranging exploration of uncertainty challenges and solutions. Additionally, the book discusses state-of-the-art computational tools and methodologies for uncertainty analysis, providing readers with the necessary tools to tackle complex engineering problems with confidence. Whether it's through Monte Carlo simulation, probabilistic optimization, or sensitivity analysis, the book equips readers with a versatile toolkit for addressing uncertainty in their own engineering projects. Moreover, the book acknowledges the interdisciplinary nature of uncertainty modeling, drawing on insights from fields such as statistics, computer science, and decision theory. This interdisciplinary approach enriches the discussion and provides a holistic understanding of uncertainty's role in engineering practice. Overall, "Uncertainty Modeling for Engineering Applications" is a well crafted resource that combines theoretical rigor with practical relevance. Its clear exposition, illustrative examples, and comprehensive coverage make it an indispensable guide for anyone seeking to navigate the complex landscape of uncertainty in engineering.
