This book contains all contributions to the congress, in which both detailed scientific investigations and technological innovations in the process chains of machining and forming are discussed as well as comprehensive, far-sighted overall views on the planning and control of production processes. These approaches are supplemented by more interdisciplinary cross-sectional topics such as robotics, control engineering, automation, materials technology, additive manufacturing and human-centered production. It is particularly striking that the main approaches presented aim to improve efficiency in production using data-driven methods such as machine learning and artificial intelligence. However, the use of measurement results to improve simulations is also frequently addressed. The book proceedings show that transformations can only succeed through the realization of both detailed technical improvements in production technologies and optimized production organization.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Welf-Guntram Drossel studied Information Technology and Technical Acoustics at the Technische Universität Dresden and obtained his doctorate in the field of simulation of forming processes in 1998 at the Institute for Metal Forming at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. In 2004 he gained a teaching position at the Technische Universität Chemnitz in Machine Tools – Mechatronics, became Associate Professor in 2006 and was appointed to the full professorship of Adaptronics and Functional Lightweight Design in 2014. He has also been Director of the Fraunhofer-Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology since October 2014. Prof. Drossel is an Associate Member of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP) and Board Member of the European Research Association for Sheet Metal Working. He is also consultant for several Science Foundations.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Steffen Ihlenfeldt studied Mechanical Engineering at the TU Braunschweig and received his doctorate from the TU Chemnitz in 2012. In 2015 he took over as head of the Chair of Machine Tools Development and Adaptive Controls at the Institute of Machine Tools and Control Engineering (IWM) – now the Institute of Mechatronic Engineering (IMD) – at the TU Dresden. Since 2016 he is also head of the Department of Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) at the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU and a member of the German Academic Association for Production Technology (WGP).
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Dix
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Dix studied mechanical engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology with the focus on material science, where he graduated as a Diplom-Ingenieur in 2006. After the study, he worked as a research associate at Chemnitz University of Technology (TUC) and Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU), where he focused on the design of highly integrative, low-energy process chains. From 2011, he held a leading position at the Institute for Machine Tools and Production Processes at TUC. From 2018 he was Head of Product Management Tool Control at the company pro-micron GmbH in Kaufbeuren, Germany. With his appointment as director at Fraunhofer IWU in October 2020, he returned to Fraunhofer IWU and has since been responsible for the scientific field of Process Technology. At the same time, he became Professor of Production Systems and Processes at University of Technology Chemnitz. Martin Dix is an active member of CIRP
