In seinem klassischen Werk zeigt Wood u.a., dass das homerische Werk zunächst mündlich geschaffen und erst später verschriftlicht wurde. Der Band bietet die von Wood selbst als Privatdruck publizierte Fassung von 1769 und die posthum veröffentlichte Fassung von 1775. Im Rahmen der editorischen Nachbemerkungen bietet der Band zudem die Edition von fünf Stücken der Korrespondenz zwischen Robert Wood und Johann David Michaelis, der Woods Werk 1773 ins Deutsche übersetzte (soweit datiert, stammen die Briefe aus dem Jahr 1770). - Wood died in 1771, at a time when the Essay had not yet reached its final form. The first commercial edition (1775) was edited from Wood's papers and apparently seen through the press by Jacob Bryant. It seemed appropriate to reproduce in this volume not only the posthumous edition, but also the privately printed version of 1769. Additionally, the volume encloses the first (transliterated) edition of five letters from Robert Wood and Johann David Michaelis (who translated Wood's Essay to German, published 1773), dated 1770.
