En busca de su nieta Rosaura, perdida hace varios años, Jeremías Andrade llega a un pueblo rezumante de ratas y neblina. La dueña del putrefacto hotel y la enana que parece acompañarla siempre, niños que juegan fútbol con balones siniestros y observan la vida desde los techos ruinosos; el carretero cuya única tarea pareciera consistir en recoger los cadáveres que se apilan noche tras noche y las «caritativas» monjas, son los personajes que convergen en esta pesadilla y esta vigilia; son seres determinados por la lejanía, por el olvido, por la niebla y la suciedad. Su deambular por el pueblo lentamente revela una verdad fantasmal, una posibilidad de encuentro y aquel lugar donde todo se pierde, un abismo por siempre abierto.

Nació en Bogotá, Colombia, en 1958. Cursó estudios de comunicación social en la
Universidad Externado de Colombia. En 2006 obtuvo el Premio Nacional de Literatura en Colombia, otorgado por el Ministerio de Cultura. Su obra se ha traducido a doce idiomas y ha sido merecedora del prestigioso Independent Foreign Fiction Prize(2009) en Reino Unido y del ALOA Prize(2011) en Dinamarca. Tusquets Editores ha publicado sus novelas Los almuerzos (2009) y La carroza de Bolívar (2012), además de la ganadora del II Premio Tusquets Editores de Novela, Los ejércitos (2007).
