This book highlights the fundamental and applied aspects of geoscience that an engineer and geologist would need to be effective in the upstream petroleum industry. Geoscience is integral to exploration and production of petroleum, and a good understanding of the subject enables petroleum engineers to execute their tasks effectively in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment. Most petroleum engineers lack a geological perspective, owing to their increased focus on core engineering disciplines, and evaluate rocks from a mechanical object. At the same time, books in geoscience which are currently available for undergraduate education are written for educating geologists only. This book aims to provide geoscience fundamentals as required by engineers and geologists to prepare for a career in the upstream petroleum industry.

Professor (Dr) Sandeep N Kundu has over 20 years of experience in Exploration Geoscience industry, education and research. He is a British Council Fellow and has a double master degree in Applied Geology and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).He has managed Geoscience Projects (Mineral & Petroleum Exploration, Geospatial Database and Marine Geotechnical) during his tenure at Reliance Industries Limited, BHP Billiton and Fugro. In his early career, he had been a scientific researcher at FSU, Jena and IFGI, Muenster in Germany, IIT-ISM, Dhanbad, IIT Kanpur and at Utkal University, Bhubaneswar where he completed his PhD in Geology. From 2014 until 2021, he ran the Petroleum Minor program at the Department of Geography and taught Exploration Geoscience for the IFP-PPOT program at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at National University of Singapore, Singapore. Dr. Kundu, who now is a Professor in Geology at Ravenshaw University, teaches Sedimentary Geology, Petroleum Geosciences and has deep research interests in the application of GIS, Remote Sensing and Data Science applications in Geosciences.
