Synopsis

Comics for Choice is an anthology of comics about abortion. As this fundamental reproductive right continues to be stigmatized and jeopardized, over sixty artists and writers have created comics that boldly share their own experiences, and educate readers on the history of abortion, current political struggles, activism, and more. Lawyers, activists, medical professionals, historians, and abortion fund volunteers have teamed up with cartoonists and illustrators to share their knowledge in accessible comics form.
The stories in Comics for Choice showcase a wide range of abortion experiences from a diverse array of voices: trans voices, older voices, activist voices―relatable voices. With passionate pen strokes, artists share highly personal, moving, and even funny stories that defy stigma and stereotypes. From the days of illegal abortion services, to nationwide legalization, to modern-day struggles of clinic closures and unequal access, contributors give an entertaining primer on the history of abortion in America, and how far we still have to go. Readers will be encouraged to get involved―standing up for abortion rights, fighting abortion stigma, making links between intersecting forms of oppression, and learning about reproductive justice. About the Authors

Hazel Newlevant is a Portland-raised, Brooklyn-based cartoonist. Their comics include No Ivy League, Sugar Town, and If This Be Sin. They edited and published the anthologies Chainmail Bikini and Comics For Choice. They co-edited the anthology Puerto Rico Strong, published by Lion Forge Comics, which received an Eisner Award. Their comics have been honored with the Ignatz Award, Xeric Grant and the Prism Comics Queer Press Grant.

Whit Taylor is an Ignatz-Award winning cartoonist, editor, and public health educator from New Jersey. Her comics have been published by The Nib, The New Yorker, Radiator Comics, Rosarium Publishing, and others.

Ø.K. FOX (he/hir) is a printmaker, nightlife producer, artworker, overthinker, and former barista based in Queens, NY. After founding Zinefeast while attending SUNY Purchase, he went on to organize Disclaimer Gallery and Paperjazz Zine Fest at Silent Barn. He recently founded Intercomm Zine Fest in Ridgewood. He is interested in building more ethical and redistributive arts communities via dedicated study of Marxist theory, trans liberation, and police abolition. He co-hosts a weekly podcast called Art and Labor, which discusses current and historical political struggles in the art, education, and media fields. His personal practice experiments with the distortion of identity through fandom and mass media using zines and his drag character Sexual Gumby. His annual local drag showcase, Sonic 2006 Club recently celebrated it’s 10th year.
