Top edges red. A fine clean set. Neat 1948 ownership inscriptions on front pastedowns. Illustrated by four plates, including 2 frontispieces and one folding and by numerous engravings in text. An extensively illustrated systematic guide to human and animal physiology. Dionysius Lardner (1793-1865) was a prolific, if sometimes controversial writer and lecturer on popular science and technology. Born in Dublin and educated at Trinity College he took holy orders and moved to London in 1827 on his appointment as the first Professor of Natural Philosophy and Astronomy; he resigned after a religious controversy in 1831. His subsequent London career abruptly ended after he eloped to Paris with the wife of an army officer. The irate husband followed them there and subjected Lardner to a flogging, but was unable to persuade her to return. After being successfully sued for 'criminal conversation,' Lardner spent the rest of his life abroad with her.
