Out of context this sentence, attributed by Seneca to Epicurus, surprises the modern reader, who comes from a Christian civilization that valued the sharing of bread and wine but considered vulgar the consumption of meat outside of fast days. Undoubtedly the lines that preceded this sentence helped tone down the meaning, at least at first sight. Ante, inquit, circumspiciendum est, cum quibus edas et bibas, quam quid edas et bibas: nam sine amico uisceratio: Think, he says, about whom you eat and drink with before thinking about what you eat and drink; for to eat its meat without a friend.
