Good black leather with gilt ornamentation. Five raised bands at spine with Webster s Dictionary at second compartment. Raised gilt-decorative framing at covers. Full gilt, intricately-patterned, embossed pagination edges. 1848 date at bottom of title page below Published by George and Charles Merriam statement. Merriam gained publishing rights to Webster's in 1843 with the 1848 Goodrich revision first published in a single volume in 1848. Approximately 10 3/4 X 8 3/4 X 3 1/4 inches. Front cover detached else binding remains snug. Rub wear at edges, corners & raised bands. Foxing at tissue guard & frontis with offsetting of latter to tissue. Foxing/staining at several rear leaves. Text largely bright & unmarked with an occasional small stain. Patterned glossy end papers rubbed in slate grey, source unknown. Verso of front end paper has offsetting of a reversed inked script assumed to be from a former laid in item. Yet a sound copy overall & originally a quite handsome production. Rare.
