Thought for over 200 years to be by the John Donne, the second edition of 1685 even stating 'First English'd from the Greek, by the Learned and Reverend Dr. John Done, late Dean of St. Pauls', though opinion changing in the mid 19th century. pp. [16],80,89-184,189-219,[1]. With the initial blank. The pagination jumps are correct, the work being complete, the signatures running in 8s from A to O. Bound in contemporary sheep with blind-tooling, a little worn at the board corners & with some loss to head of spine, but quite sound & tight. Some occasional pencil marks to text & margins, without the free endapers and some light lower-margin damp-staining, but a pleasant copy in original state. Early name to title & contemporary MS note to first blank, plus presentation inscription on fixed front endpaper dated 1917. Vg.
