Drawing on his educational and practical experience, Colby Hopkins confronts the political and economic foundations that organize our nation. First, Hopkins establishes what it means to exhibit freedom in a society where each person's actions impact others. He exposes and criticizes the mainstream political discourse that polarizes people and also pits them against each other, arguing that most people do not fundamentally disagree on issues. Instead the debate is framed in a way that forces disagreement. This political process hinders our freedom. Next, in a poignant review of mainstream economic discourse, Hopkins discloses an overwhelming number of fallacies in what has been accepted as economic truth. He then exposes how the flaws in the economic foundational thinking that guides national and global policy hinder our freedom as well. But why? In this illuminating work, Hopkins highlights the thread that binds our deepest social ills of human and environmental exploitation-we ignore humanness. By ignoring what it really means to be a human in today's world, our social systems oppress our political, economic, and social freedom. This is why no matter who our elected leaders are, the country is always in turmoil. To Hopkins, this connection makes the solution simple-we must structure society to recognize humanness. Finally, having exposed the root causes of our social, political, and economic aliments, Hopkins passionately lays out how each of us can address our most pressing problems. By creating new societies based on humanness, Americans can achieve sustainable political and economic freedom in our communities. Hopkins convincingly illustrates how this process can change our world!
