About this Item
115 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Altersbedingt etwas abgenutzt, allgemein gutes Exemplar. Mit Ex Libris von Hildebrecht Hommel. - PREFACE The subject of this essay is Aristotle s theory of first principles concerned with acts to be done {rà ytQaxrd, nça- xTinal à.Q%at) and premisses which form a syllogism and deal with this kind of human conduct. From the analysis of the practical first principles, and of the practical premiss along with the practical syllogism we can form an exact idea of Aristotle s conception of ethical principles. We can see further how he thought they could be established. Aristotle s theory of rà nQaxrà concerns both ethics and politics. Hence, the way by which we grasp ethical principles, the method of ra TiQaKTa in general, is also applicable to the political field. Aristotle ascribes this method to legislative art {voyoderixy) as the right way for the lawgiver to carry out his task. Modern legal science follows the same method of comparing the laws of different countries {comparative law, droit comparé, Rechts- vergleichung). Greek thought, whatever its object, grew in connection with its fundamental theses. From this point of view we can particularly approach the two great philosophers Plato and Aristotle. Therefore, the analysis of special subjects presupposes the general principle, and fundamental theses can be properly understood only by the examination of the individual solutions that have been given to the special subjects.
