Second edition in English of Manière de bien penser (first published in French 1687), following the rare English translation of 1705 (located by ESTC in only two copies); here translated and loosely adapted by John Oldmixon. Manière de bien penser was the key philosophical and critical work of the French Jesuit priest Dominique Bouhours (1628-1702), outlining the principles of thought and logic with regard to literature. Oldmixon's adaptation considers this with reference to English literature; the translator was a historian and poet himself. ESTC T124844. Octavo (198 x 121 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, rebacked and recornered with red morocco label. Complete with terminal advertisement leaf. Early ownership signatures and inscriptions (one effaced) to front endpapers, light running stain at head of first few leaves, contents otherwise clean and crisp, tiny patch of loss at bottom forecorner of pp. 17/18 not affecting text, tiny running wormhole at head of terminal twenty or so leaves not affecting text. A very good copy.
