About this Item
First published 1880 with regular revisions in editions down to 1922. Pocket manual for the use of Indian Army officers, providing comprehensive instructions for the drill and discipline of Indian infantrymen. Initially compiled by Edmund George Barrow (1852-1934), then a Probationer for the Bengal Staff Corps. Barrow, a veteran of the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), had risen to be military secretary to the India Office by the time of publication of this edition. Lieut., later Major Brooke Tindall, who oversaw the revision was killed by a sniper in the Khaisora Valley in September 1936 while on operations on the North West Frontier. Clearly of immense practical use, and wide circulation, but the format is eminently portable, construction fragile, with the result that the attrition rate for this fascinating little vade mecum is inevitably high for any edition. Library Hub shows a complete run in the British Library, WorldCat adds a third edition at SUNY, a fourth and eighth at Calgary, and a seventh at McMaster. Contemporary ownership inscription of "Alfred Herbert Jones, Indian Army Reserve Officer, 2nd Lt. 96th Berar Infantry". Jones joined the reserve in November 1917, attached to the 96th March 1918, promoted full lieutenant November of that year, and released April 1920. Octavo. Double-sided folding letterpress table and one folding plate. Original dark yellowish green pebble-grain cloth on rigid card boards, lettered in gilt on spine and front cover, dark grey surface-paper endpapers. A little rubbed, spine dulled and creased, front hinge sometime neatly repaired; light foxing to fore-edge and sporadically to the text; a very good copy.
