In deze jeugdroman vertelt John Flanders het avontuurlijke verhaal van Charles Curtiss, een afstammeling van de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Noord-Amerika die als vicevoorzitter van de Verenigde Staten opkomt voor de rechten van de inheemse bevolking. Ook de figuur van pater Quirin, een Ierse missionaris die in de negentiende eeuw onder de inheemse gemeenschappen werkte, speelt een rol. Het verhaal behandelt de confrontatie tussen verschillende culturen en belicht de gevolgen van alcoholmisbruik en de politiek van verdeeldheid voor de inheemse volken. De roman verscheen oorspronkelijk in 1939 als twee afleveringen van de reeks Vlaamse Filmkens, onder de titel Curtiss bij de roodhuiden. Voor deze zelfstandige uitgave van 1956 verzorgde Renaat Demoen de omslag en de binnenillustraties. Het boek is een voorbeeld van de Vlaamse avonturenlectuur voor jongeren uit het midden van de twintigste eeuw. John Flanders was het pseudoniem van Raymond De Kremer (1887-1964), een Vlaams schrijver uit Gent die ook bekend werd onder de Franstalige auteursnaam Jean Ray. Hij schreef fantastische verhalen, griezelverhalen, avonturenromans en jeugdliteratuur. Onder de naam John Flanders publiceerde hij talrijke verhalen in populaire Vlaamse tijdschriften en jeugdreeksen, waaronder de Vlaamse Filmkens van uitgeverij Altiora in Averbode.
