Item description from seller

An ambitious example of female amateur bookbinding, unusually executed on an 18th-century folio. The revivalist furniture on the boards is confident, but the pastedowns reveal that the binding was intended to be more imposing still. The front pastedown is inscribed by the elusive Dorothy Rowe above an elaborate pencil design for the front board; the rear has the beginnings of its counterpart. Folio (385 x 235 mm). Early 20th-century morocco, spine with raised bands, boards with large inner recessed panels, cornerpiece furniture inset with ivorine, front board with cross in relief, lettered in blind at head at foot, rear ruled in blind, metal clasps, leather straps lacking, pencil designs by binder to pastedowns. Contemporary partial inscription to title page. Spine ends worn, splits to head and foot of joints but firm, binding moderately marked and rubbed, paper repair to title page, contents slightly wormed. A very good copy.
