Small 8vo (92 x 60mm), pp. [ii], ix, [i], 258; final leaf shaved at foremargin (with very little loss of print, and no loss of sense); else a very good copy, in contemporary sheep over pasteboard, rubbed and worn, with loss of leather on upper cover and some on spine. 'Fourth edition'. This volume of Newbery's 'Circle of the Sciences' series, which was begun in the mid-1740s, was first published by him in 1748; the second edition followed the same year, and a third in 1770. It seems clear that this edition was copied from (and probably inspired by) the latest London edition. Newbery's own fourth edition was not published until 1778. Roscoe, Newbery, J62 (not mentioning this edition). Rare: ESTC locates only four copies, at the National Libraries of Ireland and Scotland; and at Duke and Yale in the USA.
