FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8.5 x 5.75 inches. 191 pp. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt, in price clipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has edge wear, including head and tail of spine. Some wear to board edges with a little foxing and damp staining at lower edge and corner; otherwise a very good copy. Signed by author on title page. Loosely inserted: clippings on new book and press notice of 1989. Illustrated by 15 pages of black and white photographic plates, including portrait frontispiece. Very good account of cross channel swimming, which remains one of the best works on the subject. Sam Rockett (1919-89) was a famous figure in Folkestone in the 1950s, assistant manager and instructor at the open air pool and training supervisor for the Daily Mail and Butlin's international Channel races, 1950-51 and 1954. Founded by Patrick Marrin's father George in 1946, Marrin's Bookshop has been based in its current Folkestone location since 1963. Patrick has worked in bookselling since 1970. As well as rare antiquarian books, maps and prints, the stock includes a wide range of literature, library sets, travel, history and illustrated books in all fields. We also offer a bookbinding and restoration service. Visitors to the shop are welcome and we exhibit at UK book fairs.
