8vo. 8.5 x 5.25 inches. [6] + xv + [3] + 560 + [16] pp. index. Separate title page for A Companion for the Fasts, but pagination and register are continuous. Bound in contemporary full calf; spine in compartments with gilt band with contrasting red morocco title label, gilt. A little age related wear and on instance of ink marking in text (p. 64); otherwise a very good copy. Armourial bookplate of Johnston Grant. Illustrated by 2 engraved frontispiece plates. A manual of Anglican festivals and fasts, including saints days, arranged by the church year from Advent to All Saints with a separate part on fast days. Robert Nelson (1656-1715) was a lay religious writer and a nonjuror, who moved abroad for a period after the accession of William and Mary. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1695 and was a prominent early member of the SPCK. A best selling title published from 1704 well into the nineteenth century.
