TWO VOLUMES. 8vo. 5.25 x 7.5 inches. Part I, viii + 250 pp.; Part II, v + [i] + 316 pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, with blind stamped borders enclosing panel on boards, spine decorated gilt. Bevelled edges. A little wear to extremities, front hinge starting to crack, Vol. I and some foxing of flyleaves and last two pages, Vol. II; otherwise a very good set. One of the earliest modern studies of comparative religion, with an emphasis on ancient and eastern faiths. James Clement Moffat (1811-90) was born in Glencree, Galloway and worked as a printer before emigrating to the US in 1832, where he advanced his education at the University of Princeton. He taught classical languages and history in a number of academic institutions, in 1861 becoming a Professor in the Theological Seminary of Princeton, where he taught church history.
