72pp. Later plain wrappers. Titlepage backed in matching paper, repairing the upper and outer margins. Moderate age-toning, soiling on last few leaves. Otherwise just about very good. The 1712 Dublin edition of Jonathan Swift's political pamphlet, in which he criticizes England's continual involvement in the War of the Spanish Succession and its inability to negotiate peace. Once a member of the Whig party, Swift now aligns himself with Tory interests as he insists upon the importance of peace with Spain while underlining the great economic strain caused by the war. Swift aimed to persuade the British public into accepting the recently signed agreement with the French, and this pamphlet is "a powerful defence of the thesis assumed in the 'Examiner,' that the war had been protracted against our true interests from corrupt motives, and solely to benefit our allies" (DNB).
