Hand coloured etching of a woman sitting in a chair with text above & below: edges sl. worn, old folds. Ink inscription on top of page '1st of April Man (?)', 8 line poem written in ink on verso; small yellow label with 'PEACE' pasted below image. The text above recounts bad luck with men, especially John who has stepped out with a house-maid, and below reads: 'Well, Dolly Dumps, how very pensive you look; / Have you forgotten your mutton to cook? / You're so sad and so gloomy, I really opine / Cupid thinks you too old for a true valentine.' It seems that after Valentine's Day, the paper was repurposed for April Fool's Day with an original comic poem: 'Fine Lady I'm a Batchelor / Arrived at ninety three / And aft to think in years / You are not far short of me / Now if to marriage you are inclined / To live single is not clever / Lady if to join we can agree / It is better late than never - I remain yours truly, to Miss Maggs, W.
