Despite lobbying many M.P.'s the campaign was not a success, and Paine returned to Lewes to find himself dismissed, officially for deserting his post. The failure set him on the path that would see him take ship to America the following year. "Printed by Peter Chasseaud at The Market Tower, Lewes," commemorating the bicentenary of Paine's death.
