Jean de la Bruyere, 1645-1696, was a French moralist and philosopher and tutor for the children of the Condé family - of the House of Burboun - as well as Mademoiselle de Nantes, daughter of Louis XIV. 'In his role of tutor, La Bruyere spent his time in the home of the Condé family or at Court, where he obviously gained inspiration for his elaboration on Theophrastus's characters. In the later years of the seventeenth century English interest in the Characters was renewed, and bound up with, interest in the work of Jean de la Bruyerè, whose Caractères de Théophraste was first published in 1688. The first post-Restoration English translation. was made [in 1699].' Ref: The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English, Vol. 3, 2005. Seller Inventory # 50926

8vo, pp. [xiv], 288, 291-451, [1]; [xxx], 5-45, [1] blank, [2] contents; lightly browned in places, apparently wanting blank A1 but otherwise complete; in contemporary calf, a bit worn, but sound. First edition in English of the Caractères of La Bruyère (d. 1696), first published in 1688. The example of Theophrastus - whose own work is translated as an appendix - was obviously profoundly influential, but the book has a tone and purpose all of its own, and was widely read. As the translator states in his preface: 'His design was to make his Reader a Wise, a Good man, and a fine Gentleman, and his manner of presenting it is entirely new: No Author on his subject has come up to his Force and Delicacy, nor has any so agreeably varied his Stile'. There is a Key to the characters, identifying the people intended, a few of whom are also named in the marginal notes. Provenance. Early inscription on upper free endpaper of Henry Gibbon, 1717, with initials 'HG' in the same hand on title page. 19th century armorial bookplate of R. Admiral Wollaston, Bury, Suffolk (probably Charles Wollaston, d. 1845). Seller Inventory # 25579
