215 pp, in original red boards decorated in black and gilt. Boards show some old insect damage and light dust soiling, previous owner's name on front fly-leaf; else clean and sound. No dust jacket. Biography of General Charles George Gordon (Chinese Gordon, Gordon Pasha), a British army officer and administrator who was instrumental in putting down the Taiping Rebellion, for which he accumulated praise and honors in China and Great Britain. In 1873, he was appointed governor of the province of Equatoria in the Sudan. Between April 1874 and December 1876 he mapped the upper Nile and established a line of stations along the river as far south as present day Uganda. He was eventually killed by rebels in the Sudan.
