Gr 9 Up-Everything from flag burning to e-mail encryption is covered in this series entry. It is divided into four chapters, each of which presents six to eight articles, reprinted from a wide variety of publications, that explore issues related to freedom of expression, the right to privacy, separation of church and state, and the Internet and civil liberties. Despite the interesting topics, the writing styles tend toward a kind of lifeless and rather dry recitation of facts and opinions. The editorial cartoons are a valuable addition, as are the occasional sidebars. What is lacking in this collection is a few original and insightful voices. As important as they are, Antonin Scalia and Sandra Day O'Connor are not Nat Hentoff or Cal Thomas. The index is also disappointingly incomplete. In spite of its weaknesses, this title will be helpful for reports or debates.-Herman Sutter, Saint Pius X High School, Houston, TX
