The Memorial Edition, number 170 of 509 sets. This smartly bound collection includes three posthumously published works: Conrad's last, unfinished, novel, Suspense (1925), the collection Tales of Hearsay (1925), and Last Essays (1926). The edition was planned while the author was still alive, as 399 signed sets. The author died in 1924 having only signed 99 sets, and the publishers changed the edition to the Memorial Edition, with 99 sets signed, 400 issued unsigned, as here, and a further 10 sets for private distribution. 23 vols, octavo (215 x 145 mm). Facsimile of original manuscript fragment as frontispiece in each vol., title pages printed in blue and black. Publisher's deluxe dark blue crushed morocco, spine lettered in gilt, compartments decorated in gilt with red morocco onlays, blue cloth sides, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut. Bindings bright, sides a little discoloured, rubbing sometime retouched with iridescent polish, internally fresh. A near-fine set.
