Small octavo; six volumes, complete. A lovely set bound in contemporary full tree calf, Greek key borders with inner border of an intertwining roll and leafy stems, each spine with a red lettering piece and black volume roundel, gilt bands and gilt motifs in compartments. Slight rubbing to the spines but all joints and hinges are intact, no looseness to the bindings, and a very pretty VG set indeed. Seller Inventory # 027905

Dodsley states that his wish in publishing the work is to preserve to the public those poetical performances, which seemed to merit a longer remembrance than what would probably be secured to them by the Manner wherein they were originally published .Robert Dodsley (1703 - 1764 ) was an English bookseller, publisher, poet, playwright, and miscellaneous writer. Coming from very humble beginnings in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, with the help of Alexander Pope and others he became one of the foremost publishers of the day. He is probably best remembered for the book offered here and his ' Select Collection of Old Plays,12 vols., 1744.
