A collection of seven tracts, bound in brown morocco with gilt title on spine with the date 1688 and the initials R.D.A. on the spine, Provenance: inside the front board is the name plate of Robert Allan and a note on one of the bound-in blanks reads "These Tracts belonged to my Ancestors, and formed part of a thick Volume of Tracts connected, for the most part, with the period of the Revolution of 1688; have at length come into my possession, and are now divided into small volumes [unreadable signature: H. J. M.] Stoney Bank" followed by a list of the tracts. The tract details are as follows: 1. An Account of the Proceedings and Transactions that have happened in the Kingdom of England, Since the Arrival of the Dutch Fleet, and the landing of the Prince of Orange's Army, printed for PB, London, 1688, title + 7pp. 2. A Second Collection of Papers Relating to the Present Juncture of Affairs in England, printed in the year 1688, title + (blank) + 34pp. 3. A Fourth Collection of Papers relating to the Present Juncture of Affairs in England, printed by Richard Janeway, London, 1688, title + (blank) + 34pp, with name M. Moor on title page. 4. A Fifth Collection of Papers relating to the Present Juncture of Affairs in England, printed by Richard Janeway, London, 1688, title + (blank) + 24pp, with initials J. J. on P.14 5. A Letter to the King, when Duke of York, perswading him to return to the Protestant Religion, wherein the chief Errors of the Papists are exposed, and the Tendency of their Doctrines to promote Arbitrary Government, proved. By an Old Cavalier, and Faithful Son of the Church of England, as Established by Law, Philanax Verax, printed by Richard Janeway, London, 1688, 8 pages. *COPAC states that "while all sources agree Leoline Jenkins wrote at least one letter to the King on this subject, some sources feel this particular letter signed with a pseud. is really by Jenkins (cf. McAlpine Cat. and Wing). EXTRA LEAF INSERTED HERE, pages 33 & 34 of a separate tract but complete in itself: Ten Seasonable Queries Proposed by An English Gentleman in Amsterdam, to his Friends in England, a little before the Prince of Orange came over. [Possible attribution to Sir John Wildman]. 6. An Account of the Late Horrid Conspiracy to Depose Their Present Majesties K. William and Q. Mary, to Bring in the French and the Late King James, and Ruine the City of London, printed for J. Humphrys, 1691, 31pp (including title), first four pages unnumbered, P.11 & P.20 both mis-numbered as P.21. By a Gentleman who was present at their Trials. *According to 'A Checklist of the Writings of Daniel Defoe' by John Robert Moore (2nd edition, 1971) this tract is one of the earliest writings of Daniel Defoe. He notes "very hastily written, and printed on four separate presses. Published after Lord Preston's trial 16 January 1691." 7. A Memorial of God's last Twenty nine Years Wonders in England, For its Preservation and Deliverance from Popery and Slavery: or A Series of Marvellous Providences, shewing All the Grand Contrivances, and Deep Hellish Designs, for the Extirpation of the Protestant Religion, and Setting up Popery and Arbitrary Government in the Land: Together with the Manner How the Lord Disappointed and Frustrated them. From the Restitution of Charles the II. To the Abdication of James the II. Printed by J. Rawlins and Sold by R. Janeway, London, 1689. Title +[blank] + letter to the Reader + Errata + 140pp. These tracts have been very well preserved. The paper is fairly uniformly browned and the title pages are somewhat dust-stained. There are a couple of ownership signature on title pages but no other markings. An important collection from the Commonwealth era.
