A Collection of State Papers Relative to the War Against France Now Carrying on by Great Britain and the Several Other European Powers

A Collection Of State Papers Relative To The War Against France Now Carrying On By Great Britain And The Several Other European Powers by John Debritt. This volume compiles Royal Navy dispatches and London Gazette extracts from April–September 1797, spanning European coastal waters (including the Lizard, Plymouth, Spithead), the West Indies, Jamaica, Barbados, and Atlantic approaches. It documents ongoing operations against French privateers, including dozens of lugers, brigs, and schooners, and prize-taking with lists of ships, armaments, crews, and routes. It emphasizes naval reconnaissance, long chases, and engagements at sea, as well as boarding actions, casualty tallies, and the valor of officers such as Nelson, St. Vincent, Parker, and Jervis. The work names numerous ships and privateers, and recounts bombardments of Cadiz and the ill-fated Teneriffe action, noting casualties and losses. It also records successful interceptions of enemy convoys and the disruption of French and Spanish supply networks. As an official archival compilation, it aims to inform government and public about naval successes, costs, and ongoing operations.
