Octavo, pp. xii, 310; advertisements front and rear. 28 plates, including frontispiece of New Hartley Colliery with tissue guard, of which 11 fold-out; 129 figures within text, and numerous tables. Publishers' maroon cloth with gilt titles to spine and titles and hewer vignette blocked in black to upper board; adverts to endpapers. Spine lightly sunned; minor wear at spine tips and corners. A slightly shaken copy with 3 cm crack at inner front hinge; faintly soiled endpapers, and a few leaves corner creased. Provenance inscription " From the library of Sid Chaplin, Michael Chaplin 03/20" to half-title. A comprehensive guide to running a successful coal mining operation, including the duties of a colliery manager, arrangement of labour and wages and different systems of working the coal seams, including a comparison of the working conditions in different districts. Sid Chaplin (1916-86) began his career as a miner at Ferryhill in County Durham, and was a writer for the NCB magazine from 1950. His novels, screenplays, poetry and short stories of working life are mostly set in his native North East England.
