very slight dust soiling to the title, pp. 28, 8vo, modern green cloth, gold lettered spine, very good. Late eighteenth-century tract advocating for the import of English rock salt into Scotland, on the basis that Scottish salt - derived from sea water - was unsuitable for the essential purposes of making butter, curing food, and provisioning long journeys. At the point of writing, rock salt was already exported to Ireland, where, thus refined, 'great quantities are smuggled into the west parts of Scotland and the profit is such as to make an ample compensation for the risk'. The author suggests that with import of English rock salt the smugglers would be thwarted, domestic salt production would thrive, King George's Treasury would gain duties, and the Scots would (lawfully) make bacon.
