The American edition appeared earlier the same year; the British edition differs only in the colour of the text on the front panel. An episodic novel about a Harlem teen gang 'The Royal Crocadiles' [sic] and their racketeering, prostitution, and streetfights with the Puerto Rican gang The Wolves. Miller was a thirty-eight-year-old white academic when he wrote The Cool World but his grasp of the street vernacular (in which the entire novel is narrated) feels believable, and was favourably remarked upon at the time.
