About this Item

Description:

FIRST EDITION, frontispiece photograph and one further plate, pp. 215, [1], crown 8vo, original quarter green cloth with blue boards, backstrip lettered in white with printed label to upper board, boards a little spotted, a few faint spots to backstrip also, slight wear at corners, a few very faint spots to endpapers, blue silk page-marker present but detached, dustjacket a little chipped, good. Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf: 'To J.W. Robertson Scott - Who cares for the Country. Bertha E. Jacques, 1937'. The recipient was a British author on rural matters, best-known for his 'England's Green and Pleasant Land' in 1925. Bertha Evelyn Jacques, née Clausen, was also an artist known for her etching and cyanotype prints; the illustrations to this book, including the etching of roses to the dustjacket's front panel, are likely her work. The text is a diary of her and her husband's happy days in Rose Cottage near Lake Michigan, principally the garden there. A scarce book, with a nice association. Seller Inventory # 66114
