The poster for "Devils Harvest" is a sought-after rarity in the world of exploitation film posters. The genre is called "exploitation" because of the distinct difference in censorship between films made before and after the Motion Picture Production Code, or "Hays Code," of 1934. This era of ultra-reactionary films slipped in racy content by tying it to moral and legal crusades. "Devils Harvest" exploited this moral panic and the fear of ?other' races created by Harry J. Anslinger, chief of the Bureau of Narcotics, before the introduction of the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937. The poster features a horned devil in green with his arms around a young woman who has gone to pot, with a reefer in her mouth and a plunging neckline. A huge reefer emblazoned with "MARIHUANA" emits a cloud of smoke with titles within it. The poster ground is littered with panic words like "SIN," "VICE," "DEGRADATION," and "DEBAUCHERY." Though not subtle, it is a striking and enduring poster, with many small digital versions available online for the now largely legal stoner households and student dorm rooms of North America and elsewhere.
